GEOG-G 352 FOOD AND POVERTY IN AMERICA (3 CR.)
This course examines the experience of food insecurity in the USA, the role of poverty in food production and consumption, and the current mitigation strategies and social movements challenging the global food regime. Students will learn the differences and connections between concepts of food security, food justice, and food sovereignty. Relationships between food and gender, race, and ethnicity will be explored, along with the geographical and social concepts of food deserts and food choice.

Course Designations Course includes community engagement. Course Description This course examines the relationship between poverty and food access in the US, the creation of poverty in the food system, and current government, private, and community responses to it. Through readings, reflections, and discussions you will participate in conversations about common narratives regarding hunger and poverty; understand food assistance programs in the US; examine how the food system impacts poverty and poverty structures access to food; and recognize the role race, class, gender and geography play in the US food system; how diverse food movements address hunger and poverty in America; and how cities, like Bloomington address food access. Learning Outcomes ¿ Demonstrate shifting definitions of poverty, hunger, and food security and their impact on policies and programs. ¿ Experience and analyze the US emergency food system. ¿ Analyze the root causes of hunger and poverty in diverse communities and different sectors of the US food system. ¿ Evaluate current initiatives to address hunger and poverty in the US. ¿ Explain food justice, food sovereignty, and other approaches to ending hunger and poverty and their associated strategies. ¿ Refine skills for critical reading and thinking, teamwork, research, and writing There are no textbooks for this course.
