Our department is fortunate to have many alumni and friends who have contributed generously to create scholarships and awards that support our students. These scholarships are awarded to outstanding undergraduates at the annual Departmental Awards Banquet held each spring.
Scholarships & Awards
William R. Black Memorial Leadership Scholarship
Award is given annually to an undergraduate student majoring in Geography who best exemplifies service to the discipline, community, and the department. You must be a junior or senior majoring in Geography and have a 3.0 or higher GPA.
Paul W. and Marie K. Baumann Endowed Scholarship Award
Awarded to a freshman, sophomore, or junior who has declared a major in Geography. Criteria include a good work ethic, a solid academic record, and continuing to major in Geography.
Robert N. Johnson Scholarship
Award is given annually to an undergraduate student majoring in Geography who demonstrates academic merit and financial need, with preference given to students who are U.S. citizens.
Outstanding Senior in Geography Award
Given annually to the most outstanding senior in the Department of Geography based on academic performance.
Climatology Award
This award is presented to an undergraduate or graduate geography student for the completion of an outstanding research paper exploring a topic in climatology. One award is offered each year and a committee determines the recipient.
Indiana Award
This award is presented to an undergraduate or graduate geography student for the completion of an outstanding research paper. One award is offered each year and a committee determines the recipient.
Geography awards
We have several awards that recognize students in some of our courses for achieving the highest grade in the class. We also have two awards for best paper: the Climatology Award and the Indiana Award.

- National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration Scholarships
Awards for study abroad that are open to our undergraduate students (usually based on merit) include the Churchill Scholarships and the Mitchell Scholarships, among others.
